The average global temperature on the day reached 17.01 degrees Celsius (62.62 Fahrenheit), surpassing the record of August 2016 16.92C (62.46F).
The world is facing heat waves all around. The Southern part of the US has been going through an intense heat dome for a couple of weeks. China has also faced the pathways, with temperatures above 35C (95F). At the same time, North Africa’s temperature has been near 50C (122F).
Even Antarctica, which is having winters currently, has also registered high temperatures. Vernadsky Research Base in the white continent’s Argentine Islands of Ukraine has also broken its record recently of July temperature of 8.7C (47.6F).
Friederike Otto – a climate scientist at Grantham Institute for Climate Change and the Environment at Britain’s Imperial College London – said this is not a milestone to celebrate. It is a death sentence for the people and the ecosystem.
The scientist says climate change and the emerging El Nino pattern were to blame. Zeke Hausfather, a research scientist at Berkeley Earth, has said that, unfortunately, this record of the hottest day in history has said to be the first of this year as new records are yet to witness because of the increasing emission of carbon dioxide and the increasing growth of the El Nino event which is pushing temperature to the new heights with the combination of the greenhouse gases.
