As per health experts, this “Disease X” will be more devastating than the COVID-19 pandemic and could lead to more than 50m casualties. Health experts say this dangerous disease may have had a similar impact as the devastating Spanish Flu of 1919-1920. World health organizations release an alert saying that this new disease may be a new agent – a virus, a bacterium, or a fungus without any known treatment.
Kate Bingham, who served as the chair of the Vaccine Taskforce of the UK from May to December 2020, has said that the Spanish Flu of 1919-1920 claimed the lives of more than 50m people, which doubled the number of people killed in the World War 1 and today we could expect that one of the deadliest viruses can cause these much of deaths alone.
She further said that to tackle the dangerous “Disease X,” we must be prepared for a record-time mass vaccination. Some of the experts further said that scientists have discovered 25 virus families. However, several millions of variants might remain undiscovered, which can spread from one species to another.
Ms. Bingham said we got lucky with COVID-19, which caused over 20 million deaths, but several deadly viruses still exist worldwide and could cause much more damage. Imagine an infectious virus with a fatality rate like Ebola replicating somewhere; sooner or later, people start to fall sick.
Experts also revealed the reasons behind this increasing outbreak of the deadly virus. They said this is the price we must pay for living in the modern world. The first reason was globalization, and then more people were crammed into cities, and now it is easy to contact one another. Viruses are jumping from one species to another mainly because of modern agricultural methods, deforestation, and the destruction of wetlands.
