This 55.22-carat ruby stone named Estrela de Fura was already the world’s largest ruby to go under the hammer. The stone was cut from the 101-carat rough stone discovered in July 2022 at Mozambique’s Montepeuz ruby mine. The Fura Gems company operates the mine. This stone was the action’s star attraction, offering 100 pieces of jewelry.
This 55.22-carat ruby was started at $21 million at the auction, which further closed and sold for $30 million plus some fee and commission to some anonymous telephone buyer. This sale has broken the world record of 25.59-carat Burmese ruby, sold at $30.33 million in 2015 in Geneva’s Sotheby’s.
Quig Bruning, head of jewelry for Sotheby’s in the Americas, has told the media that this is a true wonder of nature. Further, any ruby that comes from the ground and ends above 5 carats as a polished ruby is rare. But ten carat is rarer, and the twenty carat is unheard of. And the ruby, which is above 50 carats, is once in a lifetime opportunity.
