Teen’s Killing Sparks Chaos in France
The death of the 17-year-old teen, Nahel, who has Algerian and Moroccan parents, has stoked longstanding complaints from rights groups and within the low-income of police violence, discrimination, and systemic racism among law enforcement.
Since the teen was shot on Tuesday, rioters have created chaos in France as they have torched cars and started looting stores by targeting town halls and other properties with flashpoints, including the cities of Paris, Strasbourg in the east and Marseille and Nice in the south.
The interior ministry set up a force of 45,000 police to tackle and manage the chaos in France, resulting in 1300 arrests on Friday Night, 700 on the next night, and 157 arrests on the last night. However, out of 45,000 police officers, three were injured, and 300 vehicles were damaged by fire.
The grandmother of the 17-year-old teen who was shot dead last week by police during a traffic stop in the Paris suburb of Nanterre said that the family wanted peace, but the rioters are using the teen’s death as an excuse to create chaos in France.
