Bob Gualtieri – Pinellas County Sheriff, said that the pool cleaner had been working there for six months and was working in the home when he was mistakenly shot with an AR-15 by a former Army officer. The victim has been identified as Karl Polek, who was 33 years old and came to Dunedin’s house around 09:00 pm to clean the pool. He came too late because he could not make his earlier appointment. Also, the investigator revealed that he had not notified the house owner that he would be too late to come.
Jana Hocevar, who is 43 years old, saw an intruder at their house, and she immediately locked their door and informed her husband. Her husband, Bradley Hocevar, a former lieutenant colonel in the Army, immediately took his AR-15 assault rifle from a closet. He fired two shots at the pool cleaner, who was mistaken as an intruder from the sliding glass door.
Bradley Hocevar didn’t realize that the pool cleaner had fled, so he fired 30 shots at him within 90 seconds using his assault rifle.
Shariff said that Mr. Polek had been transported to the hospital with minor injuries, and there would not be any charges against Mr. Hocevar as he had acted within the law and didn’t commit any crime. Shariff told the report that it was lawful but awful. As per the sheriff, the pool cleaner should have informed the house owner that he would be coming late, around 09:00 PM, but he did not inform them.
