Researchers have found a new species of jumping spider in Mumbai and named it after the city “Hasarius Mumbai.”

This new spider species have been found to inhabit rocks near natural, seasonal streams at the BNHS – Bombay Natural History Society’s CEC – conservation education center in Goregaon East. This reserve has been spread over 33 acres. It is one of a few pristine mixed moist deciduous forest types in India. It also shares the boundaries with biodiverse landscapes SGNP – Sanjay Gandhi National Park and Film City in AMC – Aarey Milk Colony.
The species has been named after the city of Hasarius Mumbai, where Hasarius refers to a genus of jumping spiders of the salticid family, a category in taxonomy that ranks above species. Hasarius Mumbai is a spider that doesn’t trap its prey in the web. Instead, they stalk and hunt their prey by pouncing on them. This genus was first discovered in 1826.
