Local authorities have asked to put down the bear, JJ4, who has been found responsible for the death of Andrea Papi, the 26-year-old jogger. His dead body has been found in the region of Trentino-Alto Adige.
In 2020, local authorities had already applied for the euthanizing of the JJ4 Bear, but the ruling court overturned the order to kill the bear that killed the father and the son in the same area at that time.
During the investigation, through DNA samples, the bear was identified as a female JJ4. Further, 17-year-old JJ4 has a radio-connected collar around his neck, which can help track her movements. But as per the last update by the monitoring page of the Trento province website, the tracking of the JJ4 has been suspended due to the faulty radio signals from that collar.
The latest incident of the death of Papi has again highlighted the human-wildlife conflict in the area, where bears have been populated since 1999 under an EU-funded program. As per the data by Trento’s provincial authorities, it has been discovered that the bears’ population has risen to 110 in total as of 2021.
Gilberto Pichetto Fratin – the environment minister, met the local authorities on Tuesday to understand their situation and the action they want against the female JJ4. Some people also said to use anti-aggression sprays and reallocate the bear population from Trentino to another region or aboard.
