The tragic shooting incident occurred on Sunday at 07:30 PM near Assam-Mizoram Border. The armed havildar got involved in an argument at a petrol pump near Mizoram Armed Police’s 2nd Batallion camp in Kolasib district.
The accused had been identified as 51-year-old Bimal Kanti Chakma, who was arrested immediately by the Mizoram police after the incident and taken to Mizoram’s capital Aizawl for further investigation. As per the report, Chakma was drunk at that time and got involved in some argument with his colleagues, and after some time, he opened fire with his AK47 rifle, which led to severe injuries to both of the colleague’s Havildars.
Both the victims have been identified as J. Lalrohlua (51), a resident of Mizoram’s Lawngtlai town, and Indra Kumar Rai (43), a resident of Lunglei. As per the reports, both of the Havildars have got severe injuries. However, while Kumar Rai died before going to the hospital, Lalrohlua was declared dead after one hour of reaching the hospital.
Mizoram Police is investigating the matter but is ignoring any comment on this incident. The Assam-Mizoram border is already a sensitive area. In 2021, 6 police personnel died in an open face-off between the Assam and Mizoram Police forces. Due to this, Assam locals have blocked National Highway 306, connecting both states.
After the Sunday Incident, the Assam and Mizoram Police stopped the vehicle movements from both sides, but they were restored after some time.
