This symbolic gesture highlights the fact that Palestine remains involved in international debates, although it only has the status of an observer state of the UN. Officially accredited by the UN as a non-state entity in 2012, Palestine has joined the debate of the UN General Assembly on most relevant international issues, especially those that pertain to peace in the Middle East and the Palestinian-Israel conflict. When granting the seat to the Palestinian side, the UN clearly remain in support of the Palestinian political fight for full-fledged membership of the United Nations.
Its representatives have exercised the mandate of speaking for the Palestinian people and for the sovereignty of the land and have pleaded for the support of the international community and the right to self-determination and a peaceful settlement of the conflict with Israel. It gives them a chance to be involved in very important diplomacy discussions in the UN General Assembly and gather supporters from other countries.
The General Assembly session this year will discuss many issues of concern to the world, including climate change and global security, among others, and Palestine will be in the centre stage to bring the world’s attention that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is very much alive. During the session, Palestine’s presence at the table means that it still fights for more recognition and more participation in the international sphere, leaving no doubts about the UN’s role of accommodating everyone, member state or not.
