The India-Canada conflict has been taken away and not settled yet. The India-Canada conflict started when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India of killing Canadian Citizen Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who had left India in 2020 and fled for Canada. He had been declared a terrorist by India and had joined with the Pro-Khalistan Forces.
Situation of Fear in Punjab Amidst India-Canada Conflict
After this statement from the Canadian PM, Canada removed one of the top-level Indian diplomats from Canada. In return, India also removed one Canadian diplomat and suspended Canadian visas from anywhere in the world.
There is no improvement in the situation yet, and the effects are felt across various areas. As per a recent poll, Justin Trudeau has also lost a poll of famous PMs. People from Punjab are also facing its effects as they are worried about the prosperity of the Punjabis present in Canada, and some are getting backlash from Indian nationalists.
Sikhs comprised 2% of the Indian Population of 1.4 billion people but kept the majority in Punjab, a state of 30 million people. Sikh religion was born 500 years ago, and if we talk about outside India, Canada is where many Sikhs reside.
Himmat Singh Nijjar, 79 years old and the uncle of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, has told the local media about his views on the India-Canada Conflict. he said he thinks it very brave of Trudeau to accuse PM Modi’s government behind the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar but for the sake of an ordinary person he should not have taken that risk for his government.
One of the students from Nijjar’s village said they also fear whether Canada will issue student visas to them in the future as most Punjabis want to go to Canada for job or education purposes. Still, this India-Canada conflict between the government can hurt the prosperity of their future. India is Canada’s largest source of international students, with several 47% last year.
Sandeep Singh, 31 years old, a man from the Nijjar village, has also told the local media that the Modi government has created fear around them as they don’t want their children to be a part of any protest because if they do so, they feared that their children will face the same fate as of Nijjar in Canada.
One senior BJP leader said that if anyone said for the Separation of Punjab, it would threaten India. He also said Sikhs have done so much for the government as no one has done.
