Bangladesh leader at the 79th United Nations General Assembly, Muhammad Yunus, protested in New York. The opposition called people to the streets to protest against Yunus, claiming that this man came to power through a ‘sting operation’ and that he is responsible for the fast-growing violence against minorities in Bangladesh. The protests emerged as Yunus was gearing up for important overseas trips, including one to meet with US President Joe Biden. Despite the procession again being comprised of many people of the Bangladeshi diaspora, protestors gripped signs and shouted slogans in regard to the political hub of Yunus.
Protesters accuse Muhammad Yunus of political corruption.

They alleged that his assumption of the presidency was not very clear and that his government has not been very keen on safeguarding the lives of minorities. These accusations appear shocking, especially because Yunus is internationally recognized as a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and a world-famous social entrepreneur with a focus on micro-finance and the fight against poverty. Yunus has long taught at the international level and has been a very influential personality, but his political activities in Bangladesh have caused an uproar.
New York protestors are demanding that the world be informed of the alleged political corruption and human rights abuses being perpetrated during Muhammad Yunus’ interim regime. Still, Yunus continues to be slated for important meetings with world leaders, during which he will speak on matters of concern for Bangladesh’s advancement. Yet the protest indicates an emerging conflict in the country regarding the minority issue as well as political openness.
Muhammad Yunus has so far not offered his side of the matter to the accusations levelled against him by the protestors, but his defenders argue that the criticisms are politically influenced. However, the protestations in New York are much more about the current state of politics in Bangladesh and the position of the susceptible groups of people under Yunus.
