CDSCO started the investigation after they received several complaints from Sri Lanka about vision damages using Indian-based manufactured eye drop, which includes a Gujrat-based steroid eye drop, Prednisolone manufactured, and Mumbai-based supplier Alvita Pharma. The drug has been given to patients who were going through cataract surgeries, and it has been reported over 35 cases of this drug had adverse effects on the patient.
The batches have been withdrawn, and the samples have been sent to the CDSCO for further testing, but it should be noted that these drugs were approved and tested under the accredited lab in India. Moreover, this Indiana Ophthalmics has been registered with the Health Minister of Sri Lanka. It is one of the prominent manufacturers of eye drugs in India, supplying drugs to Sri Lanka for around seven years.
However, this was not the first allegation put on India-based drug manufacturers. Earlier this year, one such allegation was also put on Tamil Nadu-based private pharma company named Global Pharma because their eye drops and ointments used for dry eye, which was supplied to the US market, have been reported as contaminated. The US has reported over 50 harmful effects and one death from using these drugs.
