Black Friday, one of the most significant days for buyers and sellers, is celebrated after Thanksgiving, a traditional US festival, and is celebrated to express gratitude over a delicious meal, mainly roast turkey with other delicious dishes. As per tradition, today has been marked as Black Friday 2023, and people are interested in shopping and buying things they have been waiting for a long time.

Black Friday generally refers to when the sellers turn from operating the loss into making a profit. With time, the day has improved, with long store hours, large crowds, and extensive promotional offers by shoppers both in online and physical stores. Now let’s learn about how Black Friday has been originated.

History Behind the Black Friday

As per some reports by Fox News, the first time the term Black Friday was used nationwide was in September 1869, but at that time, it was not referred to as a national holiday for shopping. At that time, the term was used to describe the American Wall Street financiers Jay Gould and Jim Fisk. The pair had bought a large amount of national gold to increase the price. Still, they could not resell the gold at the price they had planned to make profits, and this matter came to light on a Friday in September 1869, which threw the stock market into rapid decline and bankruptcy from every Wall Street millionaire to a poor citizen.

As per one another story, the Term Black Friday was earlier used in the 1960s by Philadelphia police officers to describe the chaos of the large crowd of visitors to the city for holiday shopping. And the vast crowd has become a headache for the Philadelphia police, forcing them to work longer hours to deal with the traffic. Within a few years, the term Black Friday became commonly used within the local community, and retailers tried to shift it positively by calling it “Big Friday” until the 1980s, when the merchants started to spread the story of Red to black for Black Friday.
