New Delhi, February 2019 – The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has launched the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha Evam Uttham Mahabhiyan PM-KUSUM Scheme, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at integrating renewable energy into India’s agricultural sector. Approved in February 2019, the scheme focuses on the installation of solar pumps and grid-connected The Upcoming Annular Solar Eclipse: Comprehensive Guide to October 14’s ‘Ring of Fire.’ solar and other renewable power plants, with a clear objective to enhance financial and water security for farmers.
The PM-KUSUM Scheme targets
Add 25,750 MW of solar and other renewable energy capacity by 2022. This ambitious goal is part of India’s broader strategy to promote sustainable energy and reduce dependence on conventional power sources. The scheme is structured into three main components: Component-A involves setting up decentralized ground-mounted grid-connected renewable power plants; Component-B focuses on standalone solar-powered agriculture pumps; and Component-C supports the solarization of existing grid-connected agriculture pumps.

One key aim of the PM-KUSUM Scheme is to empower farmers by enabling them to utilize their arid and barren lands for solar power generation. Farmers can sell this generated power to the grid, providing an additional income stream and enhancing their financial stability. This initiative not only promotes the use of renewable energy but also helps boost farmers’ income by allowing them to sell surplus power to the grid.
In addition to financial benefits, the scheme also addresses water security by ensuring sustainable and reliable irrigation solutions through solar pumps. These pumps reduce farmers’ dependence on diesel and electricity, leading to significant cost savings and environmental benefits.
