The ED has revealed that a lot of money was invested in clandestine teacher recruitment processes in West Bengal’s schools. The agency has also alleged that Abhishek Banerjee and his wife have personal involvement in money laundering proceedings related to this scam. There is an allegation that there were jobs wrought by bribes where individuals who were not qualified to teach were hired to serve in the government school teachers.
But, Abhishek Banerjee whose alleged role has been described in these accusations also categorically denied these allegations. He accused the ED of summoning him and his wife politically and with the intention of prejudicing his family as well as his political affiliated party. But the Supreme Court did not accept this reasoning and declined to prevent the ED from investigation and thus the petition was thrown out.
This case hitherto has received much public and media attention mainly because the culprits, suspected to be from the ruling party of the state, are involved. The ED has not let go of the scam, and now, both Abhishek Banerjee and Rujira Banerjee will have to share information with the central agency. There has been disquiet over corruption in education especially after the scandals that surround teacher recruitment. Thus, the ongoing investigation may have wider political ramifications for the case pending in West Bengal.
