Supreme Court took this action while hearing a petition by the Indian Medical Association. It criticized the company for the misleading advertisement where the company had been confirming that its product could cure various health issues. Supreme Court has put a whole ban on the company’s advertisements for its products that are related to any disease or medical condition.
While banning the advertisements, the Supreme Court of India also gave Patanjali Ayurveda and Acharya Balakrishnan three weeks to respond. Earlier in 2023, the apex court warned the company that if it made false claims in its advertisement that its product could cure any disease, it would have to face a fine of Rs.1 crore.
During Tuesday’s court hearing, justices Hima Kohli and A Amanullah criticized Patanjali for continuing to advertise the false claim even after getting a warning from the Supreme Court last year. The bench said that despite the warning, the company is still claiming that their product is better than the chemical-based medicines; thus, they had to issue a notice of contempt of the court orders to the two prominent featured people of the company, Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balakrishnan.
