India’s Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, will be officially visiting Laos from November 20 to November 22. The visit will improve bilateral relations in terms of defence and seek to advance the cause of peace in the Asian-Pacific. Rajnath Singh will again engage in the ASEAN Defence Minister Meeting Plus (ADMM-Plus), a ten-member organization, namely, India, the USA, China, Japan, and Russia, among others. In fact, ADMM-Plus is oriented primarily on regional security issues and developing the military aspects of cooperation in counter-terrorism activities, maritime security, disaster management, and peacekeeping operations.

As a part of the events program, the Defence Minister is to have a diplomatic meeting with his counterparts in other participating states. During these talks, the parties will concentrate their efforts on developing defence cooperation, identifying the spheres for interaction, and discussing the major threats to security in the region. Success, especially of Singh, indicates India’s determination regarding its Act East Policy, under which New Delhi aims to step up its cooperation with the ASEAN countries in order to attain a free, open, rule-based Indo-Pacific region.
The visit comes just when India itself has recently participated in several multilateral defence platforms that show its more proactive role in regional and global security. The Indian Prime Minister Singh attends the ADMM-Plus meeting. It also underlined that more is being done to achieve bilateral cooperation in countering security threats and realizing collective and mutual opportunities.
