Omar Abdullah from the National Conference (NC) has taken oath as the first Chief Minister of the region after enacting of becoming a Union Territory in the year 2019 by revoking Article 370. The oath-taking ceremony was held on 16th October 2024 at Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre, Srinagar. Abdullah Sinha swore an oath at an official ceremony Abdullah to become the first Prime Minister of the region since the territory lost its statehood. Omar Abdullah was chosen as the Chief Minister of the NC again after the party won 90 out of 90 assembly seats in the election held in 2024 and got 42% votes again.

The NC was able to form a coalition government with Congress, which has six more seats and is supported by independent MLAs. The leaders who were at the event were Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra from the INDIA alliance and other leaders, including the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar. This government is a step towards the political rehabilitation of Jammu and Kashmir; a resolution to make the erstwhile state whole again is expected to feature in the first meetings of the new government.
