Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg has claimed that numerous times the Biden-Harris administration tried to demand content moderation on COVID-19 issues from his company. Zuckerberg wrote a letter signed to the House Judiciary Committee regarding what he said is undue influence on Meta’s policies towards content moderation during the covid-19 pandemic. Zuckerberg said that the administration and its agencies’ information requests were more akin to direct demands on what it considers objectionable content rather than general public health concerns.

Among them was the degree to which Meta’s teams had to report and remove posts or reduce their audience at the behest of the administration. To this, Mark Zuckerberg says the demands distracted the platform from achieving a middle ground when regulating COVID-19 information. The accusations were made while the House Judiciary Committee was probing into government interference with the commanding social media. This work seeks to establish if the government went rogue and sought to suppress pro-content that may have contained dissenting opinions or opinions considered ‘risky’ concerning covid 19.
Mark Zuckerberg’s letter has again stirred up discussion about what social media platforms’ responsibilities are in policing content and how much the government should intervene. Opponents have claimed that the type of pressure exerted by the government alleges to result in limitation of free speech, on the other hand, supporters see it as being appropriate to address the issues of fake news, especially in the time of the Coronavirus.
