The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India issued new rules on March 15, 2024, which might be implemented on July 1, 2024. These rules aim to prevent online scams and fraud.
As per the new SIM card rules, you cannot port your number if you recently swapped your SIM card. A swap refers to when your SIM is lost or broken, and you ask to issue a new SIM. So, you cannot port to another company after swapping your SIM.
TRAI said this would help stop online frauds, as people could swap and port the SIMs earlier. Today, it has become straightforward for scammers to capture your Aadhar, PAN, and other details. After capturing these details, they try to swap the SIM in the context of a lost SIM and thus can get a new SIM using your details. However, by implementing these new SIM card rules, scammers cannot port the SIM immediately after swapping.
In addition, TRAI has also asked DOT to implement a system that enables people to see the names and details of the people calling them, even if the name has not been saved. However, this recommendation has raised many privacy concerns.
