As per the local media, the sentence has been announced by a special court established under the Official Secrets Act. However, Naeem Panjutha, Imran Khan’s lawyer, said we don’t accept this illegal sentence.
The court’s decision came nine days before the general elections in Pakistan, where the Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf party of Khan is also contesting without any election symbol.
Imran Khan, who is 71 years of age, and Qureshi, who is 67, are both housed in the high-security Adiala Jail of Rawalpindi. Both of them have been jailed over the allegation of violating the Official Secrets Act by leaking the secrets of the state. It has been said that they leaked the secret diplomatic cable, the Cipher, sent by the Pakistan embassy in Washington last March. However, the cipher has gone missing from the possession of the Former PM.
However, both have said that the cipher contained a threat from the US to their government. Khan said earlier that this case was a joke because the prosecution team and defense counsels belonged to the government.
Khan was kicked out of the post of Prime Minister in April 2022 by a no-confidence vote, and from then on, over 150 cases have been filed against Imran Khan.
