Recently, an incident in Mumbai highlighted the risks of voice cloning scams. A man was scammed of 80,000 INR using AI voice cloning scams. The scammers pretended to be his son and a member of the Indian Embassy in Dubai.
What are AI Voice Cloning Scams?
Here, scammers use advanced AI tools to make the voices realistic replicas of other people’s voices. With these voices, scammers contact the victims’ family, friends, and other people related to them to scam them. These AI voices are so realistic that distinguishing between fake and real calls becomes nearly impossible.
One such incident was recently highlighted when a person named Vinod was scammed of Rs 80,000. A person pretending to be an official from the Indian Embassy in Dubai contacted Vinod. The scammer used an AI-cloned voice and told Vinod that his son had been arrested and would face a harsh prison sentence. He even used the AI-cloned voice of his son to ask for help to blackmail Vinod for money emotionally.
Vinod’s fear of his son forced him to act without thought. He was so emotionally pressed that he didn’t think to discuss the details with his son or the embassy. He immediately transferred the money to the scammer’s details.
After transferring the funds, Vinod contacted his son and discovered he was just an AI Voice Cloning scam victim. He immediately filed a police complaint, and the police are currently working on tracking the scammer through the bank details he used in this scam.
How do you stay safe from voice cloning scams?
- Never panic, and try to verify things before making any hasty decisions.
- Always confirm the matter with the official legal authorities.
- Legal authorities will never pressure you to send funds immediately, so be aware of the immediate fund transfer request.
- Never share your details with others, especially your bank, OTPs, or other financial details.
- If you suspect any scam attempt, immediately report it to the authorities.
