Aravind Srinivas, the CEO of Perplexity AI, revealed this incident in a Big Technology podcast. IIT-Madras alumni Srinivas said that it shows how much a company can go to retain its employees. One of the exciting things was that the Google employee who received the massive hike did not have a direct link with the AI department. Instead, he was a part of the search team.
Apart from this, Srinivas, on the podcast, also talked about the tech layoffs; he said that the companies mainly target employees with high salary packages and still not showing enough productivity. The first month of 2024 has left tens of thousands laid off, including 32,000 employees from the tech industry alone.
Regarding layoffs, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, also warned that Google employees could face more layoffs by saying that the company must make these tough decisions to make more space for potential investments.
In an internal memo, Pichai has told Google employees that they are planning to invest in their most significant priorities this year, and to make the space for that investment, they might have to make tough choices. Going towards the goals, google has already laid off thousands of Google employees since 10 January 2024. Pichai indicated earlier last year that it would cut approximately 12,000 jobs, around 6% of Google’s global workforce.
Further, the company said that they have already emailed their employees from the US by email, and for other countries, it will take longer time due to the local laws. However, the Google layoffs will affect the employees at various departments, including the advertising sales team, hundreds across teams, the hardware team responsible for Nest, Pixel, and Fitbit, and a majority in the augmented reality team.
