The fifth phase of Lok Sabha decisions on May 20 saw an elector turnout of 23.66% across 49 parliamentary supporters in six states and two union Territories (UTs) by 11 am, as per the Election Commission of India (ECI). Among the states, Bihar had a citizen turnout of 21.11%, Jammu and Kashmir 21.37%, Jharkhand 26.18%, Ladakh 27.87%, Maharashtra 15.93%, Odisha 21.07%, and West Bengal 32.70%.

The fifth phase of Lok Sabha includes over 8.95 crore citizens, including 4.69 crore guys, 4.26 crore females, and 5,409 third-orientation balloters, who will determine the destiny of 695 voters. Key political leaders challenging in this phase include Rahul Gandhi, BJP pioneers Rajnath Singh, Smriti Irani, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Piyush Goyal, Ujjwal Nikam, Karan Bhushan Singh, LJP (Ramvilas) boss Chirag Paswan, JKNC boss Omar Abdullah, and RJD leader Rohini Acharya. Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal are the polling regions in this phase. Notably, people are voting today in cities like Mumbai, Thane, and Lucknow, known for having lower urban voter turnout.
The 49 contested Lok Sabha seats are as follows: 14 for Uttar Pradesh, 13 for Maharashtra, 7 for West Bengal, 5 for Bihar, 3 for Jharkhand, 5 for Odisha, and one each for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. The ECI has set up 2,000 flying squads, 2,105 static surveillance teams, 881 video surveillance teams, and 502 video viewing teams to monitor the 94,732 polling places and guarantee free and fair elections.
During the fifth phase of Lok Sabha, 565 interstate border checkpoints and 216 international border checkpoints will be in operation to stop the flow of alcohol, drugs, cash, and freebies, among other illegal activities. Surveillance is also rigorous on air and sea routes. The ECI’s extensive security and monitoring setup aims to ensure a fair voting environment for all electors and preserve the integrity of the electoral process.
