Farmers under the ‘Delhi Chalo’ protest were blocked at the Shambhu border by the police, saying that there was no permission to go forward to Delhi. The march started during a larger protest to ensure legal rights on MSP and other farmer-favorable policies. Police in Ambala detained people under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, which prohibits the assembly of five or more persons in an unlawful manner.

The measure will prevent control and maintain order during the protest as the individuals gather in a group. A police official said, “We won’t let them proceed further.” Thus, citing Section 163 has been made; without permission, they cannot go forward. However, the farmers, who protested under the banner of Samyukta Kisan Morcha claimed that their agitation included the right to move towards the capital through a peaceful march.
A key concern articulated in the protest of demolished demands comprises the legal MSP remunerative floor price to farmers, farm debt relief, and overhauls of existing policies such as the PM Fasal Bima Yojana. The ‘Delhi Chalo’ movement has received political support from Congress, members of which have expressed support towards the cause. While farmers stay locked out by tight border control, they remain committed and vowed not to relent until they are given what they want. The action of the police is paradigmatic of the difficulty the government has dealing with both the law and agrarian matters.
