With Diwali festivities being over, the national capital has experienced a major drop in air quality: Delhi air quality index (AQI) has now fallen into the ‘very poor’ range. The increased emission level can be largely related to the increased usage of firecrackers during the festivals along with unfavourable meteorological conditions, including low wind speed and temperature inversion that tends to prevent the dispersion of pollutants at lower altitudes.

On Thursday, the Central Pollution Control Board stated that several regions in Delhi registered an AQI above 300, raising the perils of poor health for delicate populations living there. Not just Delhi but nearby cities like NCR, including Noida, Gurugram, and Ghaziabad, witnessed similarly poor Delhi air quality index AQI, which signals a regional health emergency. Those people have also advised residents to reduce exposure to the outside air and put on a face mask each time they go outside to counter poisonous air.
The level of pollution has risen, making more people visit the hospital due to respiratory illnesses. People have been advised to respect those measures and avoid going out in large numbers in an attempt to contain the virus. There is pressure on the Delhi government to ramp up measures on air quality, which has been a long-standing problem in the capital city. Some examples are the re-prohibition of firecrackers, increased vigilance along construction areas, and enhanced restrictions on automobile emissions.
