This is true as CJI Chandrachud recently noted that the judiciary has to come out of its small geographical purview and look beyond its confines. He contended that the approach to the recruitment of judges should be more national in order to improve the judiciary and achieve unity in the legal profession across India.CJI Chandrachud, speaking on the occasion, also pointed out the fact that there are a large number of vacancies in the district judiciary. He disclosed that there is 28% vacancy in judicial personnel and 27% in non-judicial staff in the district courts across the country.
Some of the vacancies, which he observed, are some of the big issues that require attention to enhance the functionality of the judiciary. The CJI’s sentiments on the integration of the country at the recruitment of judges are timely since the judiciary is faced with a number of pending cases and inadequate judicial officers and supporting staff due to the rising caseload. To overcome such challenges, CJI Chandrachud has propounded the idea to ensure that all the recruitment processes are centralized in order to enhance the delivery of justice in the country.
It also became possible at the conference to recall the achievements of the judiciary system in the USA during the last 75 years and to discuss further reforms in the sphere as the legal system in the country requires constant improvement. CJI Chandrachud’s remark is a reminder that a strategic, efficient, well-manned judiciary is the only one that will be able to convincingly stand up for the rule of law and guarantee justice for all citizens.
