The advisory issued by the Commerce and Industry Ministry focused on the blatant use of health drinks. The ministry underlined that no “health drink” has been defied under the FSS Act 2006, rules and regulations submitted by Mondelez Indian Food Pvt. Ltd. and FSSAI.
The action was taken after a social media influencer, Revant Himatsingka, questioned the company for using a high amount of sugar in Bournvita. The influencer has shared a video on Instagram claiming that every 100 grams of the drink contains 50 grams of sugar. However, Mondelez has claimed that the sugar used in the drink is always below the recommended daily sugar limit for children,
NCPCR then asked Cadbury to withdraw all its misleading advertisements after they received a complaint that Bournvita brands itself as a health drink that improves children’s development and growth. However, it has been loaded with sugar.
Later, the company clarified that every 20 grams of the concoction contains 7.5 grams of added sugar, less than the daily recommended limit for children.
Experts say that growing children need ample healthy fats and protein for their development. Still, excess sugar intake can lead to the risks of chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, cancers, and obesity, and too much sugar consumption can cause joint pain, fatty liver disease, gout, and weight gain problems.
