A powerful full earthquake of 8.6 magnitude hit the Indian Ocean in 2004, which led to the deadly 26th December Tsunami, causing the loss of more than 2 lakh lives across 14 nations. The whole world was stunned and mourning due to this deadly natural disaster. People from different countries, including India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Maldives, have suffered the most damage, including lives and physical damage.
In India, 12 thousand people have been reported as dead, and 4 thousand as missing, and property damage of Rs 12 thousand crores has been reported due to this Tsunami trigger. Tamil Nadu, India, has witnessed the highest number of deaths, with 8 thousand deaths. While Andaman and Nicobar have reported over 3000 deaths, Puducherry has 599 deaths, Kerala has 177, and Andhra Pradesh has reported 107 death reports. At the same time, 13 Indian people died in Sri Lanka and 1 in Maldives.
This 26th December Tsunami Event was one of the deadliest events, which did not give time for people to recover as the high waves of the sea reached the coastal areas at the speed of 800 km/ph, and people were not getting enough time to recover.
However, Sri Lanka has witnessed one of the most significant losses due to this 26th December Tsunami, with 35 thousand people has died. Before this significant natural disaster, one of the deadly events has been reported way back to 1931 in China, when over 4 lakh people died due to the flood in China, and in 1970, when a cyclone in Bangladesh took over 3 lakh lives.
One of the reasons why this 26th December Tsunami event caused too much loss is that on that day, there were not any early warning systems in practice, and people were not ready for the deadly event. No one has the idea that the sea waves will go to take lakhs of lives. It was an unfortunate event that we still remember and is hard to forget. Let’s pay tribute to the people who died in that devastating event.
