Sports Minister of Malaysia, Hannah Yeoh, expressed hesitation early yesterday regarding the potential of their country for hosting the Commonwealth Games, referring to financial considerations. The situation came out when the original host, The Australian State Victoria, also withdrew last year from hosting, citing the escalating costs of hosting the event.
To assist Malaysia in hosting the event, the CGF extended its offer to 100 million pounds, nearly $127.93 million. Malaysian officials disclosed this offer to their cabinets but received mixed reactions due to the escalating expenditure and lack of preparation time.
The Malaysian council has suggested that CGF should scale down the versions of the games, including reducing the spending on the athletes’ accommodations and scaling back the opening and closing ceremonies of the event to control the expenditures.
