Greek PM has confirmed some human errors led to this deadly incident. Further, he said it was a terrible train accident to date and would be thoroughly investigated. One rescue worker has said that he has not seen anything like this. It takes them 5 hours to find the bodies of the dead people.
Fireman has said that people are being identified by their body parts, and there will be a rise in the death count. Pavlos Aslanidis – A father whose son is missing has said that “it was a train of terror.”
After the deadly accident, The Transport Minister of the Greek, Kostas Karamanlis, resigned, saying that when something happens, we can not take this as if nothing has happened. The train traveled from Athens to the northern city of Thessaloniki, carrying around 350 passengers. The station master of Larissa, who was 59-year-old was arrested after some hours after the tragic train accident and charged with negligent homicide.
The Spokesperson of the Greek PM has reported that two trains were left running on the same track for several kilometers, which led to the deadly train accident. But the train unionist has countered that by saying they are just making the station master a scapegoat as there were a lot of shortcomings in the railway lines and were known for years.
Further, Train staff has already released an open letter stating the safety issues and shortcomings and said it was poorly maintained and incomplete. One of the safety supervisors already resigned last year, saying that the infrastructure upgrades are pending from 2016 and the train running at the speed of 124 miles/per hour is unsafe to run on these types of railway lines.
Kostas Genidounias – The train drivers’ union president stated in response to the blame by Greek PM that they could have avoided this deadly train accident if the infrastructure had been upgraded on time.
However, there is panic everywhere now, as the Health Minister reported that most of the passengers include youngsters, and many of them were students returning to Thessaloniki after their holidays. A 22-year-old passenger said he was still shaking as it was no less than a nightmare for him.
Now the officials, including Greek PM and train staff blame each other; one says this was a human error, while the other blames a lack of safety upgrades. But whoever is guilty, general people are facing the consequences. So how will the families of the dead ones handle themselves? What are your views on this tragic train accident?
