Protests turned ugly outside the Uttar Pradesh Congress office in Lucknow on Saturday when police tried to remove Congress leaders. The scuffle happened when a Congress delegation, including state president Ajay Rai, tried to walk out of the office to go to Sambhal, where the violence erupted. Before embarking on his trip, Ajay Rai told the press that the party remained firm in its support of the people and would be there for them in the worst of times. “We are all-rounders. If we are with people, most of the time, we will discuss their concerns. I am trying to go to Sambhal. He said, “Congress will stand with people during atrocities”.

The situation got worse as heavily deployed police officers tried to prevent the Congress leaders from proceeding. Rai and his team wanted to go to Sambhal to observe the effects of recent violence because people there are living in fear. Congress leaders accused the police of trying to stop the party from contacting people affected by the violence. They have accused the state government of opposing voices within the opposition, and they will not allow them to fight for people’s complaints.
Whereas the authorities used security alarms to explain mass deployment and limitations, Congress leaders considered this as an intentional manoeuvre to hamper their attempts to mobilize the population. However, continuing in the posture of being hostile to the Yogi Aditynath administration, the Congress party has said that it will not stop from doing everything to honestly try to support the affected people of Sambhal. The incident represents the political tension in Uttar Pradesh and concerns the state’s freedom of speech.
