Within days after the occurrence of Bahraich communal violence in the City in Uttar Pradesh, the state government, under Yogi Adityanath, cracked the whip on police officials. The violence took place when the procession of Durga idols turned into violence, stone pelting and exchange of firing in which one man of the locality lost his life. As a result, the Chief Minister has assured justice and owed the situation to the victim’s family. However, what has raised a lot of controversy is how the police have dealt with the whole issue.

Several officers have been put on suspension while an internal probe has been conducted to determine the impact of those officers on the anarchy. Several of the top-ranking officials, including STF Chief Amitabh Yash and Home Secretary Sanjeev Gupta, have been dispatched to the situation in a bid to calm the situation and also make an assessment. The police have been deployed in an effort to avoid worse incidences and protect the inhabitants. The event raises issues concerning inter-community relations and, more particularly, policing during religious festivals.
