The couple has been identified as Jahanjeb Sami and his wife, Hina Bashir Baig, who moved to Delhi in 2019 from Jammu and Kashmir. The two married in October 2019 and shifted to Delhi just after two weeks of their marriage. Sami has two degrees: a B. Tech and an MBA and was working for a UK-based firm. Baig also has an MBA after BCA and has worked for a few banks before taking a break for her wedding.
The couple has rented a flat in the C block of Jamia Nagar, and they spend most of their time on weekends watching movies or visiting the bird sanctuary in Okhla.
However, when the Anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act protests broke out, the couple started to stay indoors. They surf online with aliases such as Baig, hannebee, and Katijah Al Kahsmiri, while the Sami were Xiab, Abu Abdullah, and Abu Muhammad-al-Hind. They were members of the Islamic State and worked under the instructions of their handlers in Afghanistan and Syria.
However, the couple was arrested on 08 March 2020 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. After ten days, the case was shifted to the NIA, and the couple was sent to jail in judicial custody. After four years and a month, the couple has been announced guilty.
Sami has received varying sentences from 3 to 20 years in an attempt to plot over 100 bomb blasts in Delhi in a single day, while Baig has got two sentences of 7 years each.
The couple, linked with the Islamic State, was already under the surveillance of intelligence agencies before their arrest; they were using an encrypted chat platform for communication with their handlers under the account name of Hannabee.
