How will Self-Healing Roads work?
This self-healing road technology works by incorporating small pieces of steel wool into the bitumen, the binding agent in asphalt. It makes it conducive and allows it to be heated using the induction machine. Further heating enables the bitumen to rebind with the stones and gravel in the asphalt. This helps effectively repair the cracks and prevent the formation of potholes.
Before implementing this technology of self-healing roads in the country, the government plans to analyze the cost to ensure its feasibility and efficiency thoroughly. However, suppose this revolutionary technology is implemented in India. In that case, it can be an excellent relief for transport as this technology could offer long-term solutions to the problems of potholes in India.
This technology can increase the lifespan of roads, eliminate the need for road maintenance, and reduce traffic disruption.
There has been an increase in road accidents due to potholes. The number has increased by 22.6% on national highways, from 3625 in 2021 to 4446. These accidents killed a total of 1856 people.
