The H5N1 Virus first emerged in 1996, but it has been growing continuously with the increase in infected mammals since 2020. The strain has caused the death of millions of poultry, wild birds, and land and marine mammals.
In the last six months, goats and cows have joined the list, which is surprising because these two animals were expected not to be affected by these types of influenza. Earlier this month, a case of a person infected by this virus was also reported in Texas. The man has been diagnosed now and is recovering from the effects. The man got infected by getting into contact with infected cattle.
The H5N1 Bird Flu virus has been detected in raw milk, and a current investigation is going on to determine how long the virus can survive in milk. The Texas Health Department has said that the cattle infection would not present any concerns for the commercial milk supply. Diaries are already being implemented to destroy the milk from sick cows. Furthermore, pasteurization also helps kill viruses.
However, people are still advised to ensure safe food practices and consume only pasteurized milk and milk products.
