Indian security agencies have detained a China-Pakistan cargo ship, which was bound for Karachi from China, at Nhava Sheva port of Mumbai. The security agency has detained that cargo ship because of the suspicion of the dual-use cargo, which might have been used for Pakistan’s nuclear and ballistic missile program.
China-Pakistan Cargo Ship Seized
Customs officials have received some insight about this China-Pakistan cargo ship. They immediately acted and detained the China Pakistan Cargo Ship, Malta-flagged merchant ship, CMA CGM Attila, on 23 January at the Nhava Sheva port of Mumbai.
The consignment contained a CNC – Computer Numerical Control machine manufactured by the Italian company. The computers operate this CNC machine and offer more potential, unparalleled consistency, efficiency, and accuracy compared to the manual methods.
As per reports, it has been found that during the investigation of the detained consignment by the Defence Research and Development Organisation, it has been found that the consignment was meant to be used for Pakistan’s nuclear program. Experts further suggest that the detained equipment could be instrumental in manufacturing crucial components for Pakistan’s missile development initiative.
Since 1996, CNC machines have been subject to the Wassenaar Arrangement, an international arms control regime that focuses on preventing the proliferation of equipment with dual-use capabilities. There are 42 member countries in the arrangement, and India is also one of them, which participates in the exchange of information regarding transfers of both dual-use goods and technologies and conventional weapons. Earlier, North Korea also used these types of CNC machines for its nuclear program.
When they got insights about this, Port officials of Mumbai immediately informed the Indian Defense authorities for the inspection of this China-Pakistan cargo ship. On inspection, it confirmed some suspicious consignment, which led to the detainment of the Chain-Pakistan cargo ship.
The consignment documents confirmed that the consigner of the shipment is Shanghai JXE Global Logistics Co Ltd, and the consignee is Pakistan Wings Pvt Ltd from Sialkot. Furthermore, the 22,180-kilogram consignment originated from the Taiyuan Mining Import and Export Co Ltd and was meant for Cosmos Engineering in Pakistan.
